In the mood for Love
20.12.2024 - 16.02.2025

Love permeates all human existence involved in endless self-reflection, and at the same time remains an incomprehensible empirical concept. The group exhibition ‘In the Mood for Love’, which opens the 20th season of the Ruarts Gallery, is an ode to this multidimensional feeling with rapid heartbeat and vertigo.

The project is dedicated to the anticipation of love, the aura of seduction and eroticism. Our central theme erases the boundaries between abstract ideas and personal stories, creating a connection that evokes pleasure.

This exhibition is also a reminder of the fragility, even defencelessness, of a person in love. The body becomes not just a physical object, but the space in which a variety of emotions unfold: from euphoria and bliss, calm and tenderness, to despair and loneliness. The exhibition title echoes the cinematic work of Wong Kar-wai, evoking a distant yet poignant intimacy. Although, as curator Catherine Borissoff notes: “The exhibition has almost no connection with the screen masterpiece: it is lighter, with permeable boundaries. I wanted the artists’ works, like the film, to fill us with complex and beautiful moods in anticipation of love, its awareness and enjoyment. This is the viscous balm of visual interpretations of love. ‘In the Mood for Love’ is a call to fall in love with the feeling itself.”

The exhibition features paintings, photographs, graphics and sculptures by renowned international artists including Kimiko Yoshida, Spencer Tunick, Laurent Villeret and Cornelie Tollens, as well as leading Russian contemporary artists such as Sergei Borisov, Vita Buivid, Mikhail Rozanov and Alexey Luka.
