Marat Morik (b. 1982, Novosibirsk Akademgorodok) is a Russian street artist and one of the most prominent figures of the graffiti scene, who later transitioned into easel and monumental painting using mixed media. From an early age, he was passionate about painting, attending art school and studying albums of old masters; at the age of six, he discovered Modigliani, one of the key artists who influenced his work. He received degrees in philology and economics at the Novosibirsk State University (NSU), but always gravitated toward art. In 1998, with the advent of the internet, he became deeply involved in hip-hop culture and graffiti, mastering spray paint and experimenting with lettering. In the mid-2000s, he collaborated with Andrey Berger (Aber): together they organized the Paint Methods festival across Siberian cities and founded the graffiti agency FGA. In the 2010s, Morik moved beyond strictly associating his work with hip-hop culture and began experimenting with subjects and techniques, blending abstract and figurative painting while exploring contemporary artistic trends. His practice places particular emphasis on texture, materiality, and elements of typography. He creates murals, illustrations, watercolors, and canvas works. Over time, he shifted from acrylics and aerosols to oil painting: “Oil can replace everything—it provides both texture and a wide range of effects. The most effective approach is combining it with acrylic: an acrylic underpainting followed by work in oil.” The collage method, widely used by Morik, allows him to combine diverse techniques and approaches. His works are generally not unified by a single theme, but instead embody distinct impressions drawn from lived experience. He frequently works with archival materials, incorporating found imagery into compositions alongside scenes observed in everyday life. His experience in creating urban murals has significantly enriched his artistic method: his works clearly reflect a strong influence of the monumental art tradition. His murals—large-scale paintings on building facades and various structures—transform urban space into a kind of theater of images. In the project titled “Weak Points,” Morik addresses themes of human vulnerability and fragility: “Aging, envy, aggression, loneliness, inadequacy, madness—all of this is the soundtrack to my paintings. I do not aim to provoke a specific emotion directly; I only want to intrigue. My task is to immerse the viewer in an atmosphere of unease and turn them into a witness.” Marat Morik’s works are exhibited not only in Russia, but also in Europe and the United States. He actively collaborates with street art galleries worldwide and is a regular participant in major international street art festivals in Spain, France, Italy, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Canada, the United States, and China.
